Soldier in Court for defrauding 75 people of GH¢723,000 in recruitment scam

A 38-year-old soldier, Staff Sergeant Clement Ayomah, has been arraigned before the Dansoman Circuit Court for allegedly defrauding 75 individuals of a total sum of GH¢723,000.00 under the pretense of facilitating their recruitment into Ghana’s security services.

The accused, who is currently in the custody of the Ghana Military Police, pleaded not guilty to a charge of defrauding by false pretences, in violation of Section 131(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

Dressed in full military camouflage, Ayomah stood before Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit and denied all allegations.

Chief Inspector Wonder, prosecuting, told the court that in September 2021, Ayomah approached the complainant, Police Officer Gilbert Gli of the Techiman MTTD, and claimed to have connections that could facilitate enlistment into various security agencies.

Based on this representation, Gli mobilised 75 interested individuals who contributed a total of GH¢723,000.00.

The funds were subsequently handed over to the accused, with the expectation that the enlistments would be secured.

However, Ayomah allegedly failed to deliver on his promise, and none of the individuals were recruited. Despite repeated follow-ups, the accused only refunded GH¢155,000.00, leaving a balance of GH¢568,000.00 unpaid.

A formal complaint was lodged with the Accra Regional CID, and Ayomah was arrested by the Military Police Command.

In court, defence counsel appealed for bail, arguing that Ayomah is not a flight risk and is currently serving as a witness in a related Court Martial scheduled for April 11, 2025, at Burma Camp.

The prosecution did not oppose the bail application.

The presiding judge granted bail in the sum of GH¢600,000.00 with three sureties, one of whom must justify the amount with property documents.

The judge also directed that Ayomah remain in military police custody until bail conditions are satisfied.

The case has been adjourned to May 28, 2025.
